Facebook Timeline Rolls Out Worldwide

Now Tell Your Story with Timeline

Facebook on Thursday expanded the availability of its Timeline feature worldwide.Facebook's new Timeline feature, which offers a new way to present your Facebook profile to the world, has gone live today, but you'll have to opt in to get the new features right now.A new new type of profile which allows users to tell the story of their life on a single page.

To get Timeline on your profile, you need to first head over to Facebook's official Timeline page and click the "Get It Now" button at the bottom of the page. Once you enable it on your account, you need to set everything up. You have a seven day review period to tinker with the design before anyone else can see it, or you can hit the publish button and get it going immediately.

"Timeline gives you an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect your most important moments," Paul, an engineering manager on the Timeline team, said in a blog post. "It also lets you share new experiences, like the music you listen to or the miles you run." -  www.pcmag.com

Since the potential for revealing too much is high, Facebook has built in some extra controls around Timeline. The system will default to a seven day review period initially, giving users time to check everything that appears on their timeline before anyone else can see it. A “View As” button allows the layout to be checked from the perspective of different friends groups and non-friends, so you can ensure those slightly risque photos of you and the office photocopier are saved only for loved-ones.

Users will get a seven-day review period before their Timeline is posted to the Web, though it can be published earlier, too. Timeline will replace your existing profile, but stories and photos from that profile will be ported to Timeline.
In reviewing your Timeline, you can opt to hide or feature certain stories. To feature something, mouse over the story and click the star to expand it to two columns. The pencil icon will also let you hide, delete, or edit a post.
Posts will include a privacy drop-down menu that lets you select who sees your information: public, friends, only me, or custom.

As best as we can tell, your privacy setting seem to remain intact, but as with any Facebook update, you may want to check and make sure you're not accidentally sharing information you don't want to. Timeline comes with a few new settings of its own, including rules regarding who can post on your Timeline and who can't, so it's worth reviewing your settings before hitting the publish button.

Beginning today Facebook users will receive a notification on their profile asking them if they want to download Timeline or they can click here to learn more about it.

Ten recent algorithm changes DONE by GOOGLE recently

GOOGLE has published hundreds of blog posts about search over the years on this blog, from their Official Google Blog. But we’re always looking for ways to give you even deeper insight into the over 500 changes we make to search in a given year. In that spirit, here’s a list of ten improvements from the past couple weeks:
  • Cross-language information retrieval updates: For queries in languages where limited web content is available (Afrikaans, Malay, Slovak, Swahili, Hindi, Norwegian, Serbian, Catalan, Maltese, Macedonian, Albanian, Slovenian, Welsh, Icelandic), we will now translate relevant English web pages and display the translated titles directly below the English titles in the search results. This feature was available previously in Korean, but only at the bottom of the page. Clicking on the translated titles will take you to pages translated from English into the query language.
  • Snippets with more page content and less header/menu content: This change helps us choose more relevant text to use in snippets. As we improve our understanding of web page structure, we are now more likely to pick text from the actual page content, and less likely to use text that is part of a header or menu.
  • Better page titles in search results by de-duplicating boilerplate anchors: We look at a number of signals when generating a page’s title. One signal is the anchor text in links pointing to the page. We found that boilerplate links with duplicated anchor text are not as relevant, so we are putting less emphasis on these. The result is more relevant titles that are specific to the page’s content.
  • Length-based autocomplete predictions in Russian: This improvement reduces the number of long, sometimes arbitrary query predictions in Russian. We will not make predictions that are very long in comparison either to the partial query or to the other predictions for that partial query. This is already our practice in English.
  • Extending application rich snippets: We recently announced rich snippets for applications. This enables people who are searching for software applications to see details, like cost and user reviews, within their search results. This change extends the coverage of application rich snippets, so they will be available more often.
  • Retiring a signal in Image search: As the web evolves, we often revisit signals that we launched in the past that no longer appear to have a significant impact. In this case, we decided to retire a signal in Image Search related to images that had references from multiple documents on the web.
  • Fresher, more recent resultsAs we announced just over a week ago, we’ve made a significant improvement to how we rank fresh content. This change impacts roughly 35 percent of total searches (around 6-10% of search results to a noticeable degree) and better determines the appropriate level of freshness for a given query.
  • Refining official page detection: We try hard to give our users the most relevant and authoritative results. With this change, we adjusted how we attempt to determine which pages are official. This will tend to rank official websites even higher in our ranking.
  • Improvements to date-restricted queries: We changed how we handle result freshness for queries where a user has chosen a specific date range. This helps ensure that users get the results that are most relevant for the date range that they specify.
  • Prediction fix for IME queries: This change improves how Autocomplete handles IME queries (queries which contain non-Latin characters). Autocomplete was previously storing the intermediate keystrokes needed to type each character, which would sometimes result in gibberish predictions for Hebrew, Russian and Arabic.

Gmail’s new look

Google mail is back with a new Look:-

Back in July I had seen the preview for Gmail preview of Gmail's new look .Today, I am giving you an in-depth look at the new design. If you like what you see, over the next few days you’ll be able to switch to the new look by clicking on Switch to the new look in the bottom-right of Gmail.

Streamlined conversations
Conversation view has been completely redesigned to help you read through your email threads. You’ll now see profiles pictures for your contacts, so it’s easier to keep track of who said what. We also stripped out as much as possible so you can focus on communicating with your friends and colleagues.

Elastic density
We know that you use Gmail from a variety of screen sizes and devices, so now the spacing between elements on the screen will automatically change based on the kind of display you’re using. If you prefer a denser view all the time, you can change your density manually in the Settings menu.

New HD themes
Themes have been completely rebuilt to enable us to bring you a new set of beautiful high resolution themes with imagery provided byiStockphoto. We've updated most of the old favorites as well and your theme will be automatically carried over to the new look. Go to the Settings menu to take another look at themes and choose the one that fits you best.

Smarter navigation
The navigation panel on the left keeps your labels and chat contacts in view at all times. It's also more customizable: you can resize the labels and chat areas if you want to see more, or hide the chat area entirely via the chat icon in the lower left. You can also use the arrow keys to navigate around the interface.

Better search
Click the dropdown in the search box to see a new advanced search panel, which makes it easier and faster to find exactly what you're looking for. You can use the same panel to create a filter from any search in just a few clicks.

We’re excited to finally share Gmail’s new look with you. We’ll be bringing these changes to everyone soon, but if you’d like to make the switch right away, we’re rolling out a Switch to the new look link in the bottom-right of Gmail over the next few days.

Thinking about Security, think Ethical Hacking

Security has become a major issue these days with the extensive growth of the internet. There are malicious hackers who try and break into a system’s Security, hack accounts, attack passwords, steal sensitive data and in general, create trouble. An ethical hacker, who is also known as a ‘white hat’ on the other hand, is a computer expert who attacks the security system with legal permission in order to test the security and find out loopholes if any and report it back to the owners. Their work is to strengthen the security system so as to make it fool proof.

These Ethical Hackers use the same techniques as their malicious counterparts but they neither damage the system nor try and steal information. Instead their work is to evaluate the strength of the target’s security system and to report back to the owners about the vulnerabilities with instructions how to rectify them. There are four basic kinds of hackers:
security

  • IP Hacker – is a person who is specifically hired to hack a particular IP address. There might be instances where no information can be provided beforehand and you have to be very careful about the address while Hacking because a slight mistake can cause an international incident!
  • Physical Infrastructure hacker – This type of a hacker accesses the computer system looking for passwords and other confidential data.
  • Application hacker – is someone who has to hack deep into databases and production servers. Highly experienced hackers with proper knowledge and someone who strictly follows guidelines regarding their actions are only hired for such application Hacking.
  • Wireless Hacker – has to hack into wireless access points and report back to the employer instead of stealing passwords.
Ethical Hacking or Information Security or Computer Security or Network Security… are all included within titles of university level undergraduate degrees within the UK. No matter what they title their courses or whether or not you agree with the use of certain terms within their titles is irrelevant as they are all attempting to teach the same things.

With cyber-crime on the rise, a career in Ethical Hacking has become quite in demand in the last few years. All one needs is a keen interest in the internet and a basic knowledge of networking and With cyber-crime on the rise, a career in Ethical Hacking has become quite in demand in the last programming to enter into this field. And the best part of this profession is the remuneration which actually has no limits for an experienced ethical hacker!

RankMyHack.com Rewards Hackers With World Ranking, Bounties

RankMyHack.com Rewarding Hackers With World Ranking...

RMH
A new Web site, Rankmyhack.com, lets hackers submit and rate each others' hacks in order to determine the world's best hacker.
"The bounty section of this site was created in an attempt to focus the abilities of talented hackers against political and government forces that need to be put back in line," s0lar wrote. "This site isn't the next Anonymous or the next Lulzsec, this site is for every hacker that wants to use it regardless of country of origin, ethos, philosophy. Bounties just provide a politically constructive target for hacker's talents regardless of ability."
Meanwhile, Anonymous members are engaged in a second week of street protests in San Francisco, against the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) authorities. What began relatively peacefully Monday later turned ugly, with protesters reportedly throwing stink bombs at police and kicking in glass bus shelters.

g.co, URL shortcut for Google websites

g.co, the official URL shortcut for Google websites

The shorter a URL, the easier it is to share and remember. The downside is, you often can’t tell what website you’re going to be redirected to. We’ll use g.co to send you only to webpages that are owned by Google, and only we can create g.co shortcuts. That means you can visit a g.co shortcut confident you will always end up at a page for a Google product or service.

Today, a new URL shortcut that will link only to official Google products and services: g.co.

There’s no need to fret about the fate of goo.gl; we like it as much as you do, and nothing is changing on that front. It will continue to be our public URL shortener that anybody can use to shorten URLs across the web.

Google's global infrastructure to offer the following benefits:
  • Stability: Google's scalable, multi-datacenter infrastructure provides great uptime and a reliable service to our users.
  • Security: As we do with web search, shortened URLs are automatically checked to detect sites that may be malicious and warn users when the short URL resolves to such sites.
  • Speed: At Google we like fast products and we've worked hard to ensure this service is quick. We'll continue to iterate and improve the speed of Google Url Shortener.

Open Domain Names: Dot Anything

Anything: Internet body throws open domain names

Good.food, learnto.salsa, glossy.lipstick — people and companies will be able to set up a website with almost any address by the end of next year if they have a legitimate claim to the domain name and can pay a hefty fee. The Internet body that oversees domain names voted on Monday to end restricti

ng them to suffixes like .com or .gov and will receive applications for new names from January 12 next year with the first approvals likely by the end of 2012.
And they can be in any characters — Cyrillic, Kanji or Devanagari for instance.
The new gTLD, or generic top-level domain, programme was approved by 13 votes to one with two abstentions by the board of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) at a meeting here.
The new names could infringe on social and religious sensitivities, for instance if someone wanted to set up a .nazi domain, said Dengate Thrush.
While the new steep charges of $185,000 to apply for a domain name could deter cyber-squatters, companies with well known trademarks worry that they may have to contend with series of copycat names like coke.paris or google.zambia.
“It’s the next expansion of the Internet, it’s the future of the Internet,” said Kieren McCarthy, the CEO of .Nxt,Inc, a San Francisco-based company which covers Internet policy and governance issues.

CloudMagic Adds Instant Online,Offline Gmail and Google Docs search

We have been pretty big fans of CloudMagic for some time now. Not only does it allow you to search Gmail, Google Docs and Contacts offline but it is also SuperFast at it.Also supports Google Calendar. The free browser extension that brings super-speedy search to Gmail and Google Apps E-mail, is back in a new and improved version. It still delivers lightning-fast searches of your e-mail account, but now also searches your Google Docs and Contacts, too.
CloudMagic Search
Once installed, CloudMagic appears as a small search bar on the upper right hand side of your
Gmail or Google Docs window or on the Browser. You do need to manually add your Google
accounts (it can support multiple accounts as well) by supplying your user name and password.

CloudMagic stores your password locally on your own PC, not on its servers and that's the best part.

CloudMagic automatically begins indexing the contents of your e-mail account. The process is a bit time-consuming--it takes some time--It begin's searching right away, while CloudMagic is indexing. And you'll see results right away, too.
Search results appear in real-time, and you can search your Gmail account from within your Google Docs account, or vice-versa. CloudMagic now sports a tabbed interface that lets you see which results it has returned from "Mails," "Docs," or "Contacts." It makes it very easy to find what you're looking for, no matter which app you happen to be using.
CloudMagic results appear in a panel that drops down from beneath the CloudMagic bar. You can see a brief preview of the content that it has found. An e-mail result, for example, displays the sender, subject line, and a brief preview of an e-mail message, while a Google Docs result displays the name of the file, its format, and information about who shared it. Clicking on the result brings up another panel with its full contents, which appears to the left of the CloudMagic results list.CloudMagic is kind of Instant search for your Google Apps
From within the preview of the message, you can choose to open the document or email in question, or you can click on the name of an attached file in an email to open it.
I tried this personally and it appears to work perfectly for Gmail/Google Apps account, even if there is no Internet connection available.

With this addition, CloudMagic has got all the major Google services covered, including Gmail, Google Docs (Spreadsheets, Presentations, Form, Documents), Contacts and now Google Calendar.
Supported for Operating system :- Mac,Windows as well as for Linux.
Supported for Browser:- FireFox,Chrome

+1 button For Google Search

Use the +1 button to publicly show what you like, agree with, or recommend on the web. The +1 button can appear in a variety of places, both on Google and on sites across the web. For example, you might see a +1 button for a Google search result, Google ad, or next to an article you're reading on your favorite news site. Your +1’s and your social connections also help improve the content you see in Google SearchLearn how to +1. Don't have the +1 button yet? Get it now.

+1's from Google is actually a amazing product. When you +1 something, the +1 button will turn blue and the +1 will be added to the +1's tab new window of your profile. Here you can manage all your +1’s and decide whether you want to publicly display the +1’s tab.
Regardless of whether you chose to publicly share your +1’s tab, your +1’s will still be visible to others viewing the content you +1’d. For instance, your +1 could appear as part of an anonymous aggregated count of the people who have also +1’d the same thing:
Your name could also appear next to the +1 to help your friends and contacts identify which content may be most useful to them:

When you want the +1 button

We know! Right now we’re only showing the +1 button to a small slice of our signed in US users as an experiment. We want to make sure everything is working well before we roll the button out to everyone. The people who have the +1 button now were chosen at random.
If you don’t have the +1's from Google, but want to try it out, you can enroll in our +1's from Google experiment. Before you sign up, make sure you:
  • Use a supported browser.
  • Access www.google.com in English from the US.
  • Have the most recent Google navigation bar with the gear icon in the top corner of the page.
  • Sign in/sign out of your Google Account  to refresh your cookies.
  • Are signed in to your Google Account, and remain so while you want to see the +1 button experiment.

If you meet these requirements, enroll in the +1 button experiment on the Google Experimental page . Once you enter the +1 button experiment, a +1’s tab will be added to your Google profile where you can manage your +1’s. If you want to un-enroll from the experiment, just click Leave on the Google Experimental page. This will remove the +1’s tab from your profile.
If you’ve enrolled in the experiment, and you don’t see the +1's from Google, or if you lose access to the +1's from Google, don’t worry. We’re constantly making modifications which may temporarily affect its availability.
