People Search Engine in Europe
Posted: 23 May 2009 13:01 PM IST.
123people.com is a wonderful People search engine which is built upon the Yahoo Boss platform. It has recently launched many local sites in Europe which makes it the first multinational people search tool. It is now available in seven countries including; France, UK, US, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Austria, in six languages.

What does 123people.com do?

123people is a real time people search engine that looks into nearly every corner of the Web. You can find comprehensive and centralized people related information consisting of their social networking profiles, images, videos, phone numbers, emails, blog posting and documents and much more.

They currently gets over 16 million unique visitors per month. Designed to fundamentally improve the quality of people search on the web, the site retrieves people information from globally accessible databases and social networks on the web and also searches country-specific websites, local business services and news sources to provide fast and comprehensive results.

What is most amazing to me is the fact that the guys behind 123people.com are able to run such a popular & powerful engine by using Yahoo Search Boss. However, the big question is, If an external company can come and use Yahoo’s Search index to make something really cool, why can’t yahoo just update their own people search engine and maybe make it a little more effective?

But anyway, the only problem that 123people.com probably has is their scalability issues - because i noticed that their site is often down (because of too much traffic maybe??), who knows!

You might ask, why do we need a people search engine when we have the all-in-all of search engine like the big G! Well the best part about having a niche search engine only for finding people is that you don’t end up getting millions of results for that person name which are irrelevant and probably not even accurate. A niche engines like 123people is intelligent enough to understand where to look for people, for instance today if I want to look up specific information about someone , I usually do the following:

1. I do a search at Facebook with the person’s First, Last Name and email address.
2. I do a Twitter advanced search to see if that person has an account.
3. If I have seen the person before, I do a Google Image Search to see if I can spot him in the first page.
4. and lastly I’d do a search of his email Id, directly in Google.

Now all these gives me more than enough information to find the person that I’m looking for, however searching these different engines takes up time and if there is one engine which can do all these, I’m all in for it and you should be too!

Now, 123people is not the only search engine that is covering this particular niche. There are lots of other players that do a pretty decent job in people search as well. I personally like one of them and I think it really deserves a mention.

Pipl - Pipl is a very comprehensive people search on the web. Pipl query-engine finds very high-quality results and displays them on a single page. They look at online personal profiles, phone listings, court records and scientific publications.

Update: Apparently, Yasni.com is another cool people search engine that I didn’t know about. It also lists all the information about a person from different social networks and search engines on one single page.So the next time you are searching for a person online, you know where to look!

Sri Lankan army deaths revealed

Sri Lankan army deaths revealed :

"Sri Lanka says more than 6,200 security personnel were killed and almost 30,000 wounded in the final three years of the war with the Tamil Tigers".

Sri Lanka's troops finally ended the war at the weekendstate ------>

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa revealed the figures on
TV - the first such official statement.

It is thought at least 80,000 people have been killed in the 26-year war.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is to arrive in Sri Lanka on Friday to discuss the plight of about 275,000 internally displaced people.

Sri Lanka officially announced an end to the war this week, after its troops took the last segment of land held by the rebels, and said it had killed the top Tamil Tiger leadership, including its chief, Velupillai Prabhakaran.

'Reconciliation'

Mr Rajapaksa, brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, told the state-run Independent Television Network that the final phase of the operation against the rebels had begun in August 2006.

"Since then the security forces, including the army, navy, the air force, police and the civil defence force, have lost 6,261 personnel killed and 29,551 wounded," Mr Rajapaksa said.

There are no official figures for the number of Tamil Tiger rebels killed in the civil war, although estimates vary from between 15,000 and more than 22,000.
The UN says 7,000 civilians have died since January alone, although the government disputes this figure.
"We made huge sacrifices for this victory."

The focus will now shift to the resettlement of the internally displaced.

On Thursday, two visiting Indian envoys met the president and said they had been told Sri Lanka would resettle most of the displaced Tamils within six months.

The issue will be top of Mr Ban's agenda when he arrives.

Aid groups complain their access to the displaced camps has been greatly restricted.

Mr Ban will visit the Manik Farm area in Vavuniya, where most of the displaced are held.

He has sent his own envoy, Vijay Nambiar, ahead of him and on Friday Mr Nambiar said there had to be a political reconciliation.

"The process of national reconciliation, we feel, must be all inclusive so that it can fully address the legitimate aspirations of the Tamils as well as other minorities," he said.

"It is important that victory becomes a victory for all Sri Lankans."

Mr Nambiar said he had flown over the conflict zone to assess it.
"We were not able to see any civilians. What was truly striking was the almost total absence of human habitation... it was almost eerie."
He would also not rule out possible investigation of war crimes.

"Where there are grave and systematic violations of international humanitarian law, these are things which should be looked at by the international community, by the United Nations," Mr Nambiar said.

The Mythic Apple 'Tablet': More Burning Questions

The Mythic Apple 'Tablet': More Burning Questions:

Analysis: The new tablet, due out in the fall or maybe this summer, has tongues wagging. Here are three burning questions swirling around this mysterious device.

When word recently leaked that Apple bought 10-inch touch screens from a Taiwanese manufacturer, the mobile world buzzed and twittered. Is it a giant iPhone? A flying netbook? Probably more like Clark Kent's reporter tablet.

The new tablet is supposed to come out in the fall or maybe this summer, analysts predict, which has only raised the hype meter.

Here are three burning questions swirling around this mysterious device.

Burning Question No. 1: Who will carry the Apple tablet?

Apple's 1993 Newton PDA wasn't unleashed to the market before its time. It just wasn't a good idea. Aside from niche users, say nurses roaming a hospital and updating medical charts, the large PDA was doomed to quickly fade from the mainstream user's radar screen like a bad X-Men prequel. (Okay, I just saw the Wolverine flick and think you probably should not.)

A tablet will surely weigh heavy on your belt or in your shirt pocket. That's not good for most guys, unless droopy jeans is the look you're after or you miss the glory days of super-sized pocket protectors. Not sure about purses, though, since I don't carry one regularly.

"The need for super portable computing has largely been satiated by the smart phone," says Forrester analyst Nathan Safran. "I'm not sure that enough folks also want a tablet PC."

But the tablet will fit nicely in your backpack just like a laptop or netbook, which, of course, begs the question: Why not carry a laptop or netbook? An Apple tablet would mostly be used for Web browsing and email, Safran says, and that's still best done on full-featured computers with QWERTY keyboards.

Burning Question No. 2: Will the Apple tablet run on Verizon's network?

There have been rumors that Apple will release the tablet on Verizon's CDMA cellular network—yes, an Apple rumor, which is about as real and rare as Twitter spam. (Want to know how to start an Apple rumor yourself, and game the stock? Jim Cramer tells all.)

Rest assured that Apple and Verizon won't hook up for a while. "I don't think it's real," says Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney. "Apple has said publicly that they don't care for CDMA because it's not a worldwide standard. Thus, the first time Apple could show up on Verizon is when they move to LTE (long-term evolution), which is about 2012."

An Apple-Verizon deal for the tablet also carries the risk of alienating iPhone customers who've already switched over to AT&T for the iPhone, Safran says. On the upside, an Apple-Verizon deal would help Apple reduce the role of carriers, says Forrester analyst Charles Golvin.

Burning Question No. 3: Kindle who: Is this the killer e-reader?

Is there any doubt that the Apple tablet will go after the suddenly hot e-reader space, even though Steve Jobs has pooh-poohed the market? From Amazon's new large screen Kindle aimed at academia to New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. shaking the e-reader pom-poms to a slew of e-readers coming to market, signs everywhere point to a market on the verge of taking off. And an Apple tablet could light the fuse.

The problem, though, comes down to cost. It's unlikely that an Apple tablet will be cheap enough to get into the hands of the masses. Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney envisions the tablet as a clamshell version of the iPhone that will have a hard time breaking the $500 barrier. Indeed, there was a collective moan when Amazon announced the Kindle DX's price tag: $489.

The safe bet is that people won't pay that much for an e-reader. "There has been a lot of attention around the e-reader category recently, and this could be another interesting use case" for the Apple tablet, Safran says. "I don't see it being priced nearly low enough for this, though."

Google claims 30 percent Chrome speed boost

Google claims 30 percent Chrome speed boost:

Google has shifted the JavaScript engine that powers its Chrome Web browser into a higher gear.

The company announced Thursday that an update to Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine, combined with a new version of the Webkit browser engine, should improve the loading speed of JavaScript-heavy Web pages by up to 30 percent. The updates will be automatically downloaded to existing copies of Chrome.

JavaScript engines are one of the new fronts in the browser wars, with various vendors touting the performance of their browsers this year in hopes of unseating the competition. Chrome did very well on CNET JavaScript tests earlier this year, besting Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer.

Google also announced a few other changes to Chrome, including the addition of new features that let you erase embarrassing (or NSFW) Web sites from the most-visited list that appears when you open a new tab in Chrome. And Chrome now has a feature found in many browsers: form autofill.

Google's Chrome 2.0: First Impressions

The fast just got faster: The latest news from google made just before 2 hours before releasing on this blog.

Cheers to all readers
the blog continues..
Google's Chrome 2.0: First Impressions:

Chrome 2.0 promises to be a faster browser than its predecessor, but don't expect many new features.

Google Chrome is a browser whose only claim to fame (aside from being a Google product) is its speed and simplicity. In fact, some would claim that Chrome is simple to a fault, with version 1 of the browser lacking features that seem almost fundamental for a Web browser in 2009, such as form auto-fill, a full-screen mode, and extensions. With Chrome 2.0, Google has closed the gap a little bit, adding a full-screen mode, form auto-fill, and the ability to remove thumbnails from the “New Tab” page, along with a whole host of bug fixes and overall performance improvements.

Chrome 2.0 looks and acts exactly like the previous version; the new features are so subtle that without Google’s announcement, it’s likely they would have gone unnoticed by many of its users. Full-screen mode is easy enough to find; press F11 to invoke it, or select it from the wrench icon menu in the toolbar. But it’s also nearly useless--when in Full-screen mode, all of the browser controls disappear: no tabs, no toolbar, nothing. You can’t enter new addresses to visit. You can’t access your bookmarks, except from the Chrome start page. Everything must be done via keyboard shortcuts or the anemic right-click menu. Google says this mode is designed for viewing videos and presentations in full-screen, but any competent video or presentation player already provides full-screen support, so I have to wonder why this feature even exists in this state.

The other new features aren’t much better. Form auto-fill is a feature that other browsers have had for years. As you fill out a form field, Chrome will display possible choices below the field, and you can click to select one. It’s not pretty, it just works. The ability to delete thumbnails from the “New Tab” page is utilitarian at best. Click Remove Thumbnails, click the thumbnails you want to remove, and click Done. Oddly, if you have fewer than four thumbnails and you delete one, it will remove all of your thumbnails (this is presumably a bug). Also, you can't rearrange the thumbnails on the page. Both of these features seem so basic that it’s a wonder they weren’t there all along.

Where Chrome 2.0 shines is in its performance. It zips through the most complex Web applications with ease, and never seems to get bogged down. The browser is lightning fast, but then so was version 1.0, and while Google asserts that 2.0 is even faster and more stable, no one is going to notice the small increments in speed and stability.

Chrome is the Lamborghini of Web browsers. It’s built to be the fastest browser out there, and--like a Lamborghini--it does so by putting powerful technology under the hood and adding just enough on top to make it street-legal, but not much more. The regrettable car analogy aside, Chrome 2.0 maintains that reputation. It isn’t going to win any functionality awards or come out on top in feature comparisons, and the new stuff is completely unremarkable. But it will still get you to your favorite sites faster than anything else, and for existing Chrome users it’s worth downloading, if only to stay current. Newcomers to Chrome, however, will find it extremely lacking.

Trouble in the Google-verse: Users report problems using Google search engine, gmail, other features

Users report problems using Google search engine, gmail, other features:SAN FRANCISCO - Millions of people were cut off from Google Inc.'s search engine, e-mail and other online services Thursday, sparking a flurry of frustrated venting that served as a reminder of society's growing dependence on Google's technology.

The Mountain View-based company blamed the trouble on a glitch that routed too much of its traffic through computers in Asia, overwhelming its system so badly that about 14 percent of its users encountered problems with the Internet's most popular search engine. The mistake also affected Google's e-mail and several other services.

The outages began about 10:48 a.m. EDT and lasted for about an hour, according to Urs Hoelzle, Google's senior vice president of operations.

Google's problems rippled around the Web because other sites rely on its analytics service and also draw much of their traffic from searches done through Google.

Many Web sites took twice as long to load and were twice as likely to fail during Google's disruption, according to Gomez Inc., which helps Internet companies manage their applications.

"We've been working hard to make our services ultrafast and 'always on,' so it's especially embarrassing when a glitch like this one happens," Hoelzle wrote on Google's blog. "We're very sorry that it happened, and you can be sure that we'll be working even harder to make sure that a similar problem won't happen again."

Before the repair, many people locked out from Google went elsewhere on the Internet to express their dismay and despair.

Multiple messages posted on Twitter, a popular information-sharing forum, indicated that people all over the world had trouble with the Google search engine and e-mail. But other Twitter users said their Google services have been running smoothly.

Because Google is used by hundreds of millions of people, even a breakdown affecting a small percentage of its audience can have a huge impact. Google's search engine, by far the most popular on the Internet, fields more than 9 billion monthly search requests in the United States alone.

As part of its effort to retain its current users and expand its market share so it can sell more Internet ads, Google has invested billions of dollars to create a vast network of computers to lessen the chances of breakdowns.

Although its search engine is renowned for its reliability, Google isn't fail-safe. Its 5-year-old e-mail service, in particular, has been susceptible to periodic outages.

Microsoft expected to unveil new version of its Internet search engine

Microsoft expected to unveil new version of its Internet search engine:

Microsoft is expected to unveil a new version of its Internet search engine next week, turning up the heat in the battle for market share with Google and Yahoo.

The new search engine, which has been in private tests within Microsoft for months, is designed to help consumers better organize search results, according to people familiar with the matter. The software giant, the sources say, plans to demonstrate its new search engine publicly for the first time next week at the All Things Digital technology conference in California. Microsoft had no comment on the report.

Tracking firm ComScore said that 64.2% of the searches conducted by Americans last month were at Google sites, up from 63.7% in March. Yahoo's share slipped slightly to 20.4% while Microsoft was down to 8.2%.

Separately, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft said Wednesday they will spend as much as $180million over the next four years to jointly develop and sell hardware and software for messaging, video and voice in a challenge to Cisco Systems.

H-P plans to create new desk phones and expand its ProCurve networking products for use with Microsoft software. The effort is one of the largest undertaken by the Frontline Partnership they formed two decades ago, the companies said.

The deal is the second in the past month between H-P, the world's largest personal-computer maker, and Microsoft, the biggest software company.

Microsoft said last month it will sell its Web-based e-mail and business software through H-P's Electronic Data Services unit in an agreement that is expected to generate $3 billion in sales over five years.

Microsoft's Kumo search engine creates buzz

Microsoft's Kumo search engine creates buzz:

Speculation points to a release next week

IDG News Service - Microsoft has not even released or confirmed next week's rumored release of its Kumo search engine, and already the industry is speculating what the new engine will or will not do, both in terms of functionality and for the company's search market share.

While little is officially known about Kumo, the Wall Street Journal has reported Microsoft will unveil the new search engine next week. Some industry analysts said they already have been briefed about the search engine under nondisclosure agreements.

Microsoft has never publicly acknowledged that it will rename its Live Search engine Kumo, but the company has confirmed it's testing a search engine internally using the Kumo.com URL. Bing is another name rumored to be the rebrand for the next iteration of Live Search.

Some believe the new search engine won't have any new technology beyond what competitors Google and Yahoo already have, based on screenshots of Kumo that were leaked to the Web in March, said Greg Sterling, analyst with Sterling Market Intelligence.

"It doesn't look radically different from the current form of so-called universal search," he said. However, Microsoft apparently has been doing work on the back end to improve the search engine, which won't be evident to people until they use the new engine, Sterling said.

Microsoft is expected to include some of the features of the Powerset search engine it acquired last June from the San Francisco-based startup. Powerset developed a technology that attempts to understand the full meanings of phrases people type while searching, returning results based on that understanding.

Sterling, who has seen the new search engine but is not at liberty to disclose details of it, said that Microsoft believes it has identified a problem people have with finding what they're looking for with competitive search engines, and the company believes it can solve that problem.

"They think they can do a better job of fulfilling those unmet needs," he said.

Microsoft currently is a distant third behind Google and Yahoo in search-engine market share, and it has been investing significantly for a number of years to change that status.

Because Google has such a strong brand and so many people use it, it will be difficult for Microsoft to improve its position, Sterling said.

"People's behavior is pretty well established," he said. "You'd have to find some feature or set of features that's real useful or fun or interesting."

Sterling said Microsoft is realistic and does not expect the new search engine to change that overnight, but rather sees it as the next step in a series of moves the company will take to chip away at Google's share.

"I don't think Microsoft has the expectation that on day two they're going to catch Google," he said. "I think they're taking a longer term view of the market."

What is the Difference between a Search Engine and a Directory?

What is the Difference between a Search Engine and a Directory?

A search engine is a machine - or a robot. A human may program algorithms for a search engine, but humans have nothing to do with your site when the spider is visiting your site or when the engine is ranking your pages. Google.com is an example of a search engine.

For the most part, humans compile directories. Dmoz.org (Open Directory Project) is an example of a directory. When you submit your site to Dmoz, a human will review your site for consideration in the Dmoz directory of web sites.

A search engine has a very large database because it will store several pages of every web site it indexes. A directory will only store a link to the home page of each site and a description.

Search engines will take the description either from some of the sentences on the web page or from the description meta tag. A directory will take the description from your submission information.

FREE EBOOK BEFORE THE SECRET

Use these teachings and unlock the secret to getting everthing you want in life! Enclosed herewith you will find Part Five. After studying this part carefully, you will see that every conceivable force or object or fact is the result of mind in action.

Mind in action is thought, and thought is creative. Men are thinking now as they never thought before. Therefore, this is a creative age, and the world is awarding its richest prizes to the thinkers.

Matter is powerless, passive, inert. Mind is force, energy, power. Mind shapes and controls matter. Every form which matter takes is but the expression of some pre-existing thought.

But thought works no magic transformations; it obeys natural laws; it sets in motion natural forces; it releases natural energies; it manifests in your conduct and actions, and these in turn react upon your friends and acquaintances, and eventually upon the whole of your environment.

You can originate thought, and, since thoughts are creative, you can create for yourself the things you desire.
It is my privilege to enclose Part Six. This part will give you an excellent understanding of the most wonderful piece of mechanism which has ever been created. A mechanism whereby you may create for yourself Health, Strength, Success, Prosperity or any other condition which you desire. Necessities are demands, and demands create action, and actions bring about results. The process of evolution is constantly building our tomorrows out of our todays. Individual development, like Universal development, must be gradual with an ever increasing capacity and volume.

The knowledge that if we infringe upon the rights of others, we become moral thorns and find ourselves entangled at every turn of the road, should be an indication that success is contingent upon the highest moral ideal, which is “The greatest good to the greatest number.”

This means that you can make changes to your contacts and calendar on your phone or in your desktop Google account. Since Sync uses push technology, the changes should automatically appear within minutes. And your information is constantly syncing, so it's up-to-date and securely stored within your Google account, even if you lose your phone.

Please note: Google Sync for S60 requires Nokia software to be installed on the phone. We also recommend backing up your calendar and contacts before setting up Sync. To find out more about setting up Google Sync on Nokia S60 phones, please visit our help center.

To try Google Sync, visit m.google.com/sync from your desktop.

Google Product Search for Android now with Barcode Scanning

Google Product Search for Android now with Barcode Scanning

Posted: 14 May 2009 09:55 AM PDT

Since we launched Google Product Search for mobile a few weeks ago, I've been using it to check prices, reviews and product details on my Android phone. In addition to typing in my product searches, I've also had some fun speaking them. Sometimes, though, when I'm looking up a specific item in a store rather than a category of products (like "bluetooth headsets"), I'd rather just scan a barcode to see results for the exact product I'm searching for. That's why we've integrated barcode scanning with Google Product Search for mobile.

Here's how to get started. First, visit the Google Product Search for mobile homepage by going to Google.com in your browser and selecting 'Shopping' from the 'more' tab. Next, tap on the 'Scan Barcode' button to install the latest version of the Barcode Scanner app -- if you don't already have it -- from Android Market.

After you've installed the application, go back to Product Search in your browser and tap on the 'Scan Barcode' button again. Select "Use by default for this action" and tap on the Barcode Scanner option. After the app opens, center the red line over the barcode and hold the phone steady. When the barcode is read successfully, you'll see a Google Product Search results page back in the browser.

You can also access the scanner directly from the top of the Product Search results page by tapping on the barcode button.

Today, barcode scanning works best for products like electronics, books, movies or video games, but we're working on adding more barcodes for other items. Of course, if your scan does not return a result, you can always type in the product name just as before.

The integration of Barcode Scanner and Product Search for mobile is available in the US and UK, for Android-powered devices.

RENAME THE START BUTTON

To rename the start button,
you will need a hex editor.
My preference is UltraEditFOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW :-

  • Copy the \windows\explore.exe file to a new name (e.g. explorer_1.exe)

  • With the hex editor, open that file and go to offset 412b6

  • You will see the word start with blanks between each letter

  • Edit it be any 5 characters or less

  • Save the file

  • Boot to DOS

  • Copy the existing c:\windows\explorer.exe to explorer.org

  • Copy explorer_1.exe to explorer.exe

  • You will also need to replace the explorer.exe in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache file as well with the new one.
  • Start Regedit

  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon.

  • Change the value of Shell from Explorer.exe to explorer_1.exe

Note :

  • This will only work with Win XP/NT/win 9x.

  • If the partition is NTFS and you can't access the files from DOS.

Win7codecs 1.1.2

Win7codecs 1.1.2:

Compiles the best codecs from all the big name codec packs. From author of Vista Codec Package. The installer will automatically remove most other popular codec releases from your computer before installing this concise yet comprehensive package. You won't need to make any adjustments or tweaks to enjoy your media content immediately. Windows Media Player and Windows 7 Media Center will instantly recognize all your files as playable.

It does not contain a media player and it does not associate filetypes. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player, limited only by the players' capabilities, to play all movies and video clips. Streaming video is supported in several formats in all popular web browsers. Users of Win7 codecs have the ability to choose what is installed and where to install it using the public redistributable. After installation you can select to remove specific portions without removing the entire package. You can also re-add the removed items at any time. The new Win7codecs which I have created do not change or mess with what M$ has going on with native support. This includes the native H264 playback in WMP12 and Media Center. DXVA accelerated H264 playback is provided by the codec package for all other capable non M$ players.
Codecs have been a problem for most users at one time or another. This is because there has never been an 'out of the box' working solution that the average computer user could install and just have everything work properly from the beginning. There are several decent codec package solutions out there, but none of them did everything I wanted. I was always in need of a tweak, adjustment, or even a re-installation just to get the codecs I needed/wanted and most of the time, the file still didn't play properly. I've never claimed to be a media guru. My media experience prior to creating these packages was to doubleclick a file I downloaded and hope that it played. So with the help of the MSFN community, I decided to package up the bare minimum of codecs required by most computer users and share them with the rest of the world.

Changes in Win7codecs 1.1.2:update ffdshow rev 2936

  • update gabest rev 1093

  • update settings application

  • fix false virus reports uninst.exe

Microsoft Office 2010 to have a public beta release

Microsoft has said that they plan to release at least one beta edition of Office 2010 for public testing.

A company representative said: “Although we are not disclosing a date for the public beta, there definitely will be one. This development cycle for Office is no different than years past; technical preview is usually invite-only, but still goes out to hundreds of thousands of people, and there is a public beta cycle where millions can download and try Office.”

Microsoft had previously hinted that they are going to skip any beta releases for Office 2010.

The company already conducts a private beta testing with a limited group of people with most of their products.

This week Microsoft is releasing Office 2007 SP2 and the stellar Windows 7 client and server platforms. Then there's going to be a big push toward Office 2010--a push that began earlier this year and picked up big steam with Microsoft's recent announcement that Exchange 2010 would be released the second half of 2009. So, I thought it would be interesting to ask you: What items are at the top of your wish list for Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010? It might be too late for Microsoft to add them to the 2010 products, but we can use our experiences with the 2007 products to build an intelligent list that we can compare against the list of features that Microsoft announces for the 2010 products over the coming weeks and months. Let me know your thoughts by emailing me at danh@intelliem.com. I'll publish a list of reader perspectives in an upcoming issue and, if possible, include some of the solutions that Microsoft is actually planning for SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010. And Microsoft will be starting development of the next version of Office soon, so maybe our voices can be heard for Office 15.0.

In no particular order and based only on what is hot on my mind today (a mind that changes regularly), here are my top five wish-list items for SharePoint 2010 and for Office 2010.

SharePoint 2010
  • Creating a development environment. The development environment is a pretty pathetic story right now. Disparate toolsets and the fact that you have to develop on a SharePoint server prevents would-be developers from even getting going. Bamboo Solutions proposed a method to run Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) on a Windows Vista client, but Microsoft needs to come out with a better (and supported) solution.
  • Replication (or duplication). Anyone who is not a developer (or who is, but has not yet learned how to create SharePoint solutions) knows how tough it is to get stuff from staging to production, let alone to duplicate stuff between sites, site collections, web apps, and farms. Trying to get your small business's intranet to reflect consistent branding (i.e., a consistent look and feel) isn't easy without cracking open Visual Studio. The same problem exists with custom content types, custom form pages, yada yada. Fortunately, several third-party vendors (such as those listed below) currently provide solutions for SharePoint replication.
  • Granular restore. SharePoint doesn't let you recover deleted items, lists, libraries, or sites on an individual basis. Significantly greater rollback occurs when you restore an entire site collection. Several vendors listed below currently provide products with granular-restore functionality, which is an investment worth making.
  • Better cross-browser capability. Only Microsoft can deliver better cross-browser capability and is beginning to do so in SP2 for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007). Microsoft also announced its intentions to provide broader browser support in future products such as Exchange 2010, so there's good reason for hope here.
  • Better scalability in lists, libraries, content databases, unique ACLs, and document size. Only Microsoft can architect SharePoint for greater scalability. Given Microsoft's push to provide "software plus services" and to satisfy enterprise customers, there's again good reason for hope here.

Office 2010

  • Fix Word's numbered and bulleted lists. It's pathetic that after 15+ years of Microsoft Office, Word's lists are still unmanageable by mere mortals. The way Word implements list styles is broken badly and needs to be completely rethought. Users are tired of seemingly random changes in list indentation, numbered lists that can't begin at the desired number, and other list behavior oddities that require endless tweaking or a "remove and reapply" approach to fix.
  • Allow Access forms to be published as front-ends to SharePoint lists. There are enough users who understand Access's form designer, so wouldn't it be nice if an Access form could become a custom form for a SharePoint list? Sure, users could learn to use InfoPath, but training and change-for-the-sake-of-change are deployment blockers.
  • Improve Outlook integration with SharePoint for offline use of SharePoint data. Outlook 2007 was light years ahead of Outlook 2003, but the offline document library had a couple of big problems: check out and updates. Microsoft needs to either fix these problems or provide a solid "take SharePoint offline" feature that doesn't require users to learn Groove, which is more complex than necessary for users who simply want their SharePoint data available offline. Colligo Networks (see below) is a leader in delivering this capability today.
  • Fix Outlook's all-day events. With SharePoint, you can create all-day events that are associated with a calendar day, regardless of what time zone you're in. Why can't Outlook? Why do birthdays shift by hours and start covering two days when I travel?
  • Improve the integration of Office and SharePoint when using forms-based authentication. Client integration using forms-based authentication is tough. We've found workarounds, but they're just that--workarounds. The rumor mill has it that there might actually be a fix in Office 2007 SP2. I haven't had time to prove or disprove that rumor yet, but it's an exciting prospect!
